From July 12 toJuly 16, CFLC hosted a five-day summer camp for high-achieving undergraduate students majoring in foreign languages from across the country. A total of 93 students majoring in English, Japanese, French, Russian and German participated in the summer camp. They had been selected from 556 applicants from across the country. During the summer camp, the participants were subjected to written and oral tests, and the top-scoring students were offered places in CFLC’s graduate programs without having to take the unified national entrance examinations for master’s degree programs.

The summer camp provided an opportunity for high-achieving foreign-language students from all over the country to network with one another; it also offered a platform for them to exchange their foreign language learning experiences.

The participants arrived at the summer camp on July 12 and the summer camp officially kicked off on the morning of the next day. The opening ceremony of the summer camp was attended by all participants and CFLC Party Secretary Chen Zhiwei and Deputy Party Secretary Shen Xiuli and CFLC Vice Deans Xu Qi, Xin Zhiying and Wu Guanghui. The opening ceremony was followed by written and oral examinations of the students.

On the afternoon of July 14, CFLC Vice Dean Pro. Xu Qi delivered lecture on linguistic and cultural research to the participants. She illustrated the cultural differences between China and Russia with words from both languages for colors and animals and encouraged students to explore the cultural factors behind language differences. Prof. Li Meihua, another CFLC vice dean, also gave a lecture on “Main Street”, a satirical novel written by Nobel literature laureate Sinclair Lewis, giving students a taste of literary research and literary criticism. The participants also attended talks given by CFLC administrators on CFLC’s international exchange, social application and volunteer service programs, as well as graduate employment and scholarships and financial assistance.

On July 15, the participants visited the Xiamen University History Museum, the Revolutionary History Museum, and Lu Xun Memorial Hall, gaining a deeper understanding of the university’s history, culture and heritage.

On July 16, a party was held for the participants, in which they staged various cultural performances. The party was followed by a closing ceremony for the summer camp, during which the participants were awarded certificates of participation.
