National Senior Forum for Chairs of English Departments – II: The Role of English in China's Modernization and Transformation since the Late Qing Dynasty - Centered on Literature

Inaugurated in 2007, the National Senior Forum for Chairs of English Departments is now in its 13th year, bearing witness to the development of English programs over the past decade or so. At this year’s forum, Professor Lu Jiande of the XMU Center for Comparative Literature and Transcultural Studies reviewed the role of English in the modernization and transformation of China since the late Qing Dynasty, and expounded the importance of English for higher education. The forum was aimed at promoting a new round of development of English programs in the new era.

Exploring the role of English in China’s modernization and transformation since the late Qing Dynasty, Professor Lu Jiande reviewed the significant role played by English in China’s social and cultural transformation over the past hundred years. He expounded the importance of translations, such as Evolution and Ethics, and the role of foreign language education in catalyzing social transformation. He stated that English played an extremely important role in the genesis and development of the modernization process. Professor Lu also introduced the famous people who have made outstanding contributions to English teaching in history, and also expressed his concern about the potential decline of fine traditions in English teaching despite its increasing popularity. He encouraged attendees not to slacken in English teaching and called on students to read English extensively.
