In July, Cui Qiliang, an associate professor of the University of International Economics and Trade gave a series of lecture at CFLC. His lectures covered computer-aided translation, translation project management, and MTI courses and career development in the context of the language service market, providing a new perspective on the new methodology and tools for translation.

In his three-day lectures on computer-aided translation, Prof. Cui first elaborated on the fundamental difference between computer-aided translation and machine translation and then introduced the use of a variety of basic translation software programs. Moreover, he encouraged the students to ask questions, think more, and build up the confidence to master translation tools. His lectures enabled the students to learn more about the features of Word for translation and the usage of Trados, the most popular computer-assisted translation software suite.

On the evening of July 4, Prof. Cui began his lectures on MTI courses and career development in the context of the language service market. In his lectures, Prof. Cui talked about the demand for and supply of translation services in China and internationally and gave insightful advice on career development for would-be translators. He pointed out that what the market needs is not only people with translation skills, but localized professionals well-versed in both translation and service. He stated that while acquiring professional knowledge and improving their translation skills, students should also develop themselves in an all-round way, improve their sense of service, enhance their communication skills, and further improve their ability to cope with pressure.

To help the students understanding localization and enhance their future management and service capabilities, Prof. Cui also lectured on translation project management, giving the students a taste of effective translation project management in various scenarios. He also introduced the mode, process and quotation practice of translation project management, and conducted an in-depth analysis from the perspective of translation quality management and communication management. In the mock bidding for the “ISTQB Beijing Test Net”, each group of students carefully prepared a corporate profile, project schedule and service quote.

Prof. Cui’s lectures provided a fresh perspective on computer-aided translation and localization management service, greatly inspiring the students and enhancing their confidence and determination to improve their translation skills and overall competency.
